Five students attended the 2016 MTI Welding Contest on April 14. The students completed a formal exam covering welding processes, terminology, acronyms, polarity, and metallurgy. Following the exam, the students completed a welding project which included SMAW and GMAW welding in flat, vertical, and overhead positions. Overall, the students enjoyed competing in the welding contest.

On Friday, April 8th, Danny Hanning brought in pigs and a lamb to demonstrate some of the practices done after birth. Mr. Hanning described the process of ear tagging, ear notching, tail docking, clipping needle teeth, castrating, hog rings, and administering vaccines. In addition to bringing livestock, he brought all of the necessary equipment to show to the students. The students discussed with Mr. Hanning, the reasons for doing these things to animals along with the pros and cons of certain practices. On April 4-5th, two students attended the Illinois Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference in Peoria, Illinois. At the conference the students attended workshops to improve their career skills such as communication, interviews, resumes, and team building skills. The students also had the opportunity to attend a career fair where they could seek out colleges and speak with potential employers. The two students and their advisor were hosted by the Schuyler County Farm Bureau. Thank you for your sponsorship! On March 19th, 19 RIHS FFA members participated in the Livestock Judging competition hosted by Bushnell Prairie City. Out of the Rushville-Industry students, Lindsey McNeely placed 1st in pigs, Wes Fowler placed 1st in sheep, and Danielle Icenogle placed 1st in beef. Congratulations to all participants!
Every year, the Rushville-Industry FFA helps at the Annual Ag Day Breakfast held at the Phoenix from 6-8AM. This year, the event was hosted on March 18th. The FFA members helped serve breakfast and clean up. The agriculture students also participated in the essay contest. This year's essay topic was "How can we make agriculture more sustainable?" Wes Fowler was the winner of the contest and read his essay to the audience at the Ag Day Breakfast.
On March 15th at 7PM, the Rushville-Industry FFA Chapter hosted Donkey Basketball with Macomb FFA. The teams consisted of students and alumni. The event had a great turn out and resulted in RIHS wins in every game! There was lots of laughter and no serious injuries-The event was a success! The Agriculture Science class has worked to incubate chicks to further learn about animals. The students conducted a lab with the newly hatched chicks to check the quality of hocks, navels, anatomical defects, feathering, and mechanical pinch. The Rushville-Industry FFA celebrated National FFA week from February 22-26 with various activities. Dress up days were established for the whole week. Each day a winner was selected and given a small prize. Monday: Mr. McClelland Day, Tuesday: Farmer/Country Day, Wednesday: Tractor/Truck Brand Day, Thursday: Camo Day, Friday: Chapter T Shirt Day. In addition to the dress up days, an assembly was held on Friday which included the Kiss a Pig Fundraiser. Many teachers volunteered to participate. The teacher with the most money in their "pig" jar by the end of the week had to kiss a pig in front of the audience. On Thursday, the chapter hosted the Dean Sears Breakfast which was open to the public. Students were also able to drive their tractors to school on Friday. On February 19-20, 3 students attended the 212 Conference in Springfield, Illinois. At the conference the students learned many leadership skills and team building strategies. They were also able to network with other FFA members across the state. One student said, "It was a really good learning experience. I leaned a whole lot there. I also met a whole bunch of friends". The conference included team building workshops, leadership sessions, and a dance.
